National Military Museum

There will be a new museum. The Army Museum in Delft and the Military Aviation Museum in Soesterberg will be merged into the new National Military Museum (NMM). A leading museum on the military and its relationship to society in the past, present and future. The museum is built at the former airbase Soesterberg and opens its doors in Autumn of 2014. For the design and development of the NMM a competition was organized in 2010.

Assignment

The assignment was to design a museum complex at the site of the former airbase Soesterberg (45 acres). It concerns not only the architecture and design of the museum building but also the development of the surrounding landscape, including an events area and a silence and memorial garden.

The Government Buildings Agency and Defense have tendered the National Military Museum in 2010, through a construction PPP (public private partnership) to spent a DBFMO contract (Design, Build, Finance, Maintain and Operate). This means that the order includes both the design and the construction, financing, management and partial operation of the museum for a period of 25 years. On 8 May 2012 the contract was signed with the winning consortium of Heijmans. Heijmans will build and operate, and is now working on the realization of the museum complex.

Vision

The museum interior is surprising and provocative. The museum building has international appeal: tough in simplicity, rich in detail. Historic and natural landscape elements are reused in the service of the story. The flexibility of the building and the surrounding landscape are such that the National Military Museum is ready for the museum and military developments of the next 25 years.

The burglar resistant doors at the National Military Museum

Protec Industrial Doors participates in this project by developing special security doors with a unique new design. The various burglar resistant doors with a very high quality and a high Rc value used to get access to the Museum. For larger aircraft and vehicles of the museum there are also burglarproof hangar doors.

These doors have the following qualifications:

  • Dimension of 16,000 mm X 6.500 mm (W x H)
  • Burglar resistance class 4 (EN1627)
  • A Rc value of 5.0 m²K/W

The doors of the museum opened on the 13th of december 2014.
